Borlain Sisters Win Big at the 2016 Alaska IronKids

Open to children 6 to 14 years old, Alaska IronKids Philippines is the local junior version of the international triathlon series, Ironman. Triathlon is a race that features three sporting events: running, swimming and biking. The competition is open to kids who are new to the sport and those who have already joined other triathlon events.

Alaska Ironkids aims to promote a well-balanced lifestyle for kids of today, who are used to staying indoors with TV, videogame console and the Internet as companions. Ironkids is also the perfect venue for families to bond and for parents to demonstrate in “real-time” that being HEALTHY can also be fun.

The Borlain siblings dominated the 2016 Alaska IronKids on Saturday at Remy Field in Subic Bay.

Samantha, Tara and Franchezka Borlain dominated their respective fields to come out as the big winners in the 2016 Alaska IronKids on Saturday at Remy Field in Subic Bay.

Eldest sister Samantha won the Girls 13 to 14 category, finishing the race in 47 minutes and 52 seconds, more than two minutes ahead of her closest competitor Everly Janarie Macalalad, who clocked in at 50:01.

Tara won in the Girls 11 to 12 category with a time of 35 minutes and six seconds. Runner-up Micaella Barlin who clocked in at 36:06

Youngest Franchezka dominated the Girls 6 to 8 category, winning the race at an amazing time of 19 minutes.

Suprisingly it was the first time all three of them won in their respective categories in the IronKids competition.

Other winners in the boys’ category include Clifford Pusing (11-12), Michael Gabriel Lozada (9-10) and Daniel Louw (6-8). Other winners in the girls’ category are Gene Heart Bukid (11-12), Aubrey Tom (9-10) and Zurielle Kenzie Galo (6-8).

Alaska IronKids is the biggest most exciting race of its kind for young boys and girls six to 14 years old. Almost three hundred participants came from all over the Philippines—with entries coming from as far north as Echague, Isabela and Villasis, Pangasinan and from as far south as Liloan, Cebu and Malaybalay City, Bukidnon—to join the event.
The race commenced with a 400-meter swim at the Olympic size, 50-meter WOW Pool behind Remy Field and concluded with the four-kilometer run along the roads of the former US Naval base in Subic.

The Alaska IronKids Duathlon in Subic included a Race Category (with Podium Medals) in four age groups for boys and girls; and a Play Category (finisher’s medal but no age categories) of short distance to promote outdoor play and increase participation for non-competitive participants.

Alaska IronKids encourages children to drop their video game consoles, cellphones, stop watching TV inside their living rooms and invites them to swim, bike and run outdoors to play instead.

But more than just a race, Alaska IronKids is a venue for families to bond in a shared activity, giving the parents a chance to show their children that being physically fit and healthy is more fun. It also fosters the importance of starting the day right with a combination of exercise and proper nutrition.

TELUS Days of Giving

TELUS International Philippines holds its 10th annual TELUS Days of Giving and renovates a public school. Leading outsourcing services provider TELUS International Philippines (TIP) recently held their annual TELUS Days of Giving, in partnership with Hands on Manila for the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela program. The event served as a prelude to Brigada Eskwela, a school cleanup program that prepares public school facilities for the coming school year.TIP returned to Cayetano Arellano High School in Santa Cruz, Manila, a secondary site refurbished by the company in 2014. This year, 2,300 volunteers repainted classrooms and hallways, repaired chairs, painted wall murals and rehabilitated the garden. A social enterprise workshop was held, engaging students in an eco-bag painting activity. Around 100 students partnered with TELUS International team members to design and make the eco-bags as part of Teen Entrepreneurship, a program launched as a volunteer activity in TIP in 2015. Proceeds from the bags sold after the workshop will be given to the participating students. An entrepreneurship talk was also conducted at the end of the session.

This was TIP’s fourth time supporting the Brigada Eskwela program, and to date, these Days of Giving activities have helped 35,290 students in five Metro Manila public schools. More than 4,300 high school students attend Cayetano Arellano High School.

“We believe that in a safe, clean and comfortable learning environment, students’ potential is maximized. Through this activity, we hope to provide a venue that will encourage better academic performance,” shares Jeffrey Puritt, President of TELUS International. “TELUS International Philippines’ 10th TELUS Day of Giving reinforces our commitment to the communities where we live, work and serve.

Our team members who came straight here from their shift and volunteered in this meaningful event bring to life the TELUS philosophy, ‘We give where we live’.”TIP held its first TELUS Day of Giving in 2007, when team members built homes in the TELUS- Gawad Kalinga Village. For the past ten years, the company has helped thousands of families, disadvantaged children and students through its partnerships with non-government organizations such as GK, Bantay Bata, Bantay Kalikasan, Virlanie Foundation and Hands On Manila.

“I am truly grateful to TELUS International for continuing to support our mission to help uplift the lives of the Filipino students. We are looking forward to the continued strengthening of the partnership which we started 4 years ago,” says Atty. Montinola, President of Hands on Manila.

Abby Assistio Meets Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg does the Alopecia Awareness hand sign with Abby Asistio and Rachel Regal (Photo: Instagram/abbyasistio)

Filipina singer-songwriter and Alopecia Awareness advocate Abby Asistio was among the few selected guests invited to join the Facebook Friends Day, where she personally met the social media site’s co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg.

From over 1.64 billion subscribers, Abby was chosen as one of about 20 invitees to Facebook’s “Friends’ Day” in celebration of its 12th anniversary. The chosen Facebook friends were treated to a special sharing session with the Facebook founder as well as COO Sheryl Sandberg. Abby was flown in from the Philippines by Facebook because of her compelling journey with the auto-immune disease, Alopecia Areata.
A fellow advocate, Rachel Regal, of Faith, US, sent her story to the Facebook team. Rachel was so depressed, but the story of Abby, which she found online, and the song Beautiful inspired her to start a friendship with Abby.

Abby and Rachel met each other through the double A hand sign campaign that Aby started in2012, and They’ve been “connected” since then. Last year, Facebook Stories featured how thesetwo were able to build a friendship, as well as campaign for disease awareness throughFacebook! And last February 1st, Abby and Rachel had the chance to tour FB headquarters inMenlo Park, San Francisco, meet and chat with the people behind Facebook (Founder & CEOMark Zuckerberg, COO Sheryl Sandberg, CPO Chris Cox, and a whole lot of awesome people),get crazy cool gadgets and have one of the best experiences of their lives.

Abby recounted that it was such a surreal feeling to be in the same room as the creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. Mark Z was wearing his trademark look (jeans, sneakers, shirt anda big smile on his face), and had such a friendly, approachable aura and demeanor about him.

Not at all intimidating! He shared stories about how the company started, its mission-vision, the ups and downs that come along, and their future plans. Those invited also had the chance to ask him questions. When Mark Z was asked about achieving success and life’s “impossibilities”. Hesaid, “There’s a difference between impossible and things taking a really long time. Even if you’re not going to be able to do something in a short time period, if you care about something, you want to see the world to move into that direction… So the best thing to do is just get started and not be discouraged. It’s tough because this stuff is hard, or else people would’ve already done it.”

Abby Asistio got the chance to ask a question to one of the world’s 50 most powerful, successful women in business, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. Aside from Alopecia awareness, Abby isalso an active Real Beauty advocate with girls and women struggling with various insecurities, being so consumed by the world’s unrealistic and sometimes superficial standards of beauty. So Abby asked Sheryl about her perception of it. Sheryl said that beauty is just like success and thatno one could really define it for you. We are all unique. We have different stories, dreams and desires. We should explore our own inner and outer beauty, believe and embrace that we are beautiful, and never allow anyone to tell us otherwise.

Mark capped off his talk by sharing their company philosophy with everyone present. Though already having over 1 billion subscribers, there are still 7 billion people all over the world without access to all the meaningful connections and information that Facebook brings. One thing that the company stands by is that “things are always 1% completed”. It keeps them grounded, reminding them that there is always so much work, growth and progress to be done, and so many people to reach out to and help.

Everything about the Facebook trip was overwhelming and inspiring according to Abby. More than anything, it reminded her about “responsibility”. We are all given our own platforms, in this case “accounts and connections”, to make a dent in this world. It is up to us to become complacent and take these vehicles for granted, or maximize the opportunities and use them to make a positive impact in this generation. Abby is grateful that Facebook has become a medium for her to communicate disease awareness and touch people beyond the confines of her tiny room and her country. Abby is also glad that she and Rachel are two out of millions of people choosing to recognize the importance of social media in contributing to making this world abetter place, and actually doing something about it.

Ms. Abby Asistio amazing hair transformation with NovuHair
Truly, God plans the best adventures and creates the most beautiful surprises. Abby knows that to spread and reach new heights and she is particularly grateful to Facebook for giving her this opportunity and to Novuhair, Nature’s Answer to Hair Loss (, for always being so supportive of her advocacy and endeavors. Abby is proud and honored to have represented the Philippines and the Alopecia community in this once-in-a-lifetime, international experience.

Summer Skincare Mistakes That are Hurting Your Skin

Unbearable heat, gallons of ice cream, and beach days are common scenes when summer comes rolling in here in the Philippines. If you’re not careful, however, the coming dry seasons could also mean sunburns, uneven tanning, and dry skin.

To beat the heat and get the most fun out of your sunventures, it’s best to know how to properly take care of your skin this summer. Start by avoiding these common summer skincare mistakes.

Skipping the Sunscreen

Many of us skip the sunscreen because it’s too expensive, it doesn’t feel good on the skin, or you just feel it’s not that important.

With the right product, however, those won’t be problems. Dermplus sunblocks, for example, are worth the purchase. These products have a non-sticky formulation to ensure it doesn’t leave a sticky residue on the skin.

More importantly, sunscreens, such as the Dermplus line, are ideal not only for outdoors but for indoors use as well. Just because you’re indoors doesn’t mean you’re protected from the sun’s damaging rays.

You can still get sunburn indoors as UV light can penetrate through glass windows, which means even if you are at home or in the office and you happen to be next to a window, you still get exposed.

Make it a habit to use Dermplus every day, especially this summer.

Forgetting to Exfoliate

Make our skincare products more effective by not forgetting to exfoliate before hitting the beach. Exfoliation removes the dead cells and encourages the growth of new, healthy skin cells, which results in a smoother, silkier, and healthier complexion.

Exfoliation also clears up the skin’s surface, which allows the sunscreen and other products to get to work deeper in the skin.

Relying on Your Summer Clothes for Protection

Summer outfits are often light, airy, and colorful. The light fabrics, however, could put your skin (even the non-exposed parts) in danger of the summer sunshine.

The white linen shirt, the sun dress, and other summer fashion favorites provide minimal protection from the sun .For this, it’s best to sunscreen it up all over, and maybe even considering clothes that cover your extremities, such as a rashguard.

Not Drinking Up

Dehydration causes headaches, dizzy spells, and dry skin, among others. When out on the beach or under the sun, be sure to hydrate properly.

Drink up on water or non-sugary beverages to help maintain the body and skin’s critical moisture balance.

Ignoring Skin Irritations

If the sun really got to your skin, be sure to soothe it as soon as possible with a cooling gel.

The Dermplus Aftersun Hydrating Body Gel works great in soothing the skin, reducing inflammation and redness, and keeping the skin from drying up, cracking, and/or peeling. The quicker you deal with sun-damaged skin, the more you reduce the damage.

This summer, make your sunventures count by knowing how to take care of your skin properly.

Kids On Bikes PH

Kids today are leading an increasingly sedentary lifestyle; they tend to spend more of their time indoors either playing with their gadgets or watching TV. We want them to lead a more active lifestyle by encouraging them to play outdoor sports and engage in other physical activities. In order for them to be able to do this, they need to have the right physical make up – they have to be tall and tough. It’s not enough for them to be just tall, they have to be tough as well with strong bones and strong muscles which they can get from daily intake of Vitamin D!

Make sure that the vitamins you are giving your kids have Vitamin D. Give them Growee! It not only has CGF for maximum height, but also Vitamin D for strong bones and strong muscles. With Growee, kids are not just tall, they’re tough as well.

Growee is available in all leading drugstores nationwide at the following prices: Growee Drops 15mL at P80.49, Growee Syrup 120mL at P146.90, Growee Syrup 250mL at P267.40.

With this is in mind they created and conceptualized Kids On Bikes PH which js the first bike-centric competition suited for different age range. Unlike most bike race and sports event, Kids On Bikes PH is the first kid-centric organic and homegrown competition. It is customized for the Filipino Kids “sa batang Pinoy”.

My daughter and I had a fun time during the event and we both realized a lot of things like there’s a special bond between kids and bikes that can never be broken. Riding a bike is a rite of passage, a passport to worlds beyond the front lawn. Bikes represent fun, freedom, and fresh air – everything that’s good about being a kid. Moreover, biking is a healthy pastime that kids will never outgrow. Here are some of the other benefits of cycling:

Developing strength, balance, and overall fitness

Burning up calories

Strengthening the heart, lungs, and lower-body muscles and bones

Developing and strengthening the muscles surrounding the knees without impact

But biking boasts other benefits as well. Children of all shapes, sizes, and abilities can ride a bike. Most important, bicycling is a healthy outdoor activity that the entire family can enjoy together. That is just some of our realizations during the Kids On Bikes which is a sports biking competition for kids. As a race to good health and wellness, this sports activity aims to promote discipline, good health, and sportsmanship for the kids. Kids On Bikes also fosters bonding, camaraderie, and fun for the whole family.

Kids on Bikes to be an annual fun race and bike carnival, declaring the kid biker of the year. Kids On Bikes will be massively promoted in schools and will have regional legs nationwide.

Kids On Bikes aims to raise benefactions for the less fortunate children in our communities by endowing the kids with bikes. Together with our partners and supporters, we are able to expand our campaign of health and wellness for the kids.

Kids On Bikes is a national fun race to promote good health and wellness for the kids, aiming to foster camaraderie, bonding, and fun for the whole family.

There 3 categories for different age range.

1) Fun Race for ages 3-5 years old

This is more of a family activity where parents or guardians play with their precious ones in a stress free and fun mini play ground.

2) Relay Race for ages 6-8 years old
A parent/guardian-kid duo mini bike race competition filled with different relay games.

3) Main Race for ages 9-13 years old

This is the major bike competition. The kids will have a friendly competition where kids will race each other to be hailed the grand title “The Biker Kid Of The Year”.

Protect yourself from heat stroke this summer

Midea, one of the sworld’s largest manufacturers of appliances, covers a complete range of products from electric kettles, washing machines, microwaves to large commercial air-conditioning systems. Thriving in over 150 countries, Midea has now arrived in the Philippines!

In partnership with Concepcion Industrial Corporation, Midea’s global strength in the appliance industry infused with CIC’s Integrity, Excellence and Total Customer Satisfaction give the world class brand a better understanding of the Filipino’s needs. This way, with Midea, the Filipino can live different, choose different.

The cool, windy days are almost over. In a few weeks, everyone will be trading in their sweaters with their swimsuits to herald the days of sun and sand. But while the coming sunny days promise fun moments at the beach, one must never forget to be diligent when it comes to problems common during this season.

With the heat index expected to rise, the public is once again reminded to be diligent against summer problems like heat stroke. The affliction, which becomes common during hot and humid conditions, is considered a serious medical emergency by the Department of Health (DOH).

Heat stroke happens when the body overheats and includes symptoms like headaches, dizziness, intense thirst, and fainting. When left untreated, it can cause damage to the heart, kidneys, and the brain.

Enjoy the moments of feeling sand between your toes while sipping piña coladas under bright umbrellas. While you are at it, practice the tips below to make sure you keep your cool this summer season.

1. Wear appropriate clothing

Wear a wide-brimmed hat and long-sleeved, light-colored clothing when going outside. Other than preventing heat stroke, this will also help protect the skin from sunburn.

2. Schedule your activities

The DOH suggests to schedule heavy-duty tasks during the beginning or end of the day when the temperature is much cooler. The risk of heat stroke particularly increases when doing strenuous activities (e.g. exercising).

3. Keep hydrated

We sweat more during summer so there is a higher need to replenish the fluids in the body. It is suggested to drink more water than coffee, soda, tea, and alcoholic beverages since they are believed to have a diuretic effect, meaning they can trigger the body to expel more liquid (in the form of urine) rather than replenish the body’s water levels.

4. Limit your time outdoors

Limiting the time spent outdoors is advised during the hot summer days. Resting in places with air conditioning to cool down is highly recommended. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), exposure to air conditioning for a few hours a day can lessen the risk for heat-related illnesses.

An air conditioner like Midea Genesis White Inverter split type model can help keep heat stroke at bay with its quality performance and technology. In addition to effective cooling performance, the model features a Quiet Mode that cancels indoor unit noise and a Bio Filter that makes use of specialized biological enzymes & HEPA filter to eliminate harmful microbes for a healthy indoor air quality.

Worried that you’ll blow up your electric bills with increase used of air conditioning? The Midea Genesis White Inverter model is equipped with the Turbo DC Inverter that switches use between the compressor and the fan and the Eco Mode which automatically adjusts its cooling function to save energy. In fact, an hour of use of this cooling appliance only costs Php 2.96 (for 1Hp) according to Meralco testing.

Heat stroke is a serious problem. Keep your chill by practicing these four steps and enjoy the summer with no worries.

This year’s program includes new locations such as Batangas, Catanduanes and Cavite to reach more children and coaches and discover the best basketball players across the country,” said Blen Fernando, Marketing Director.

The 2011 National Nutrition Survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) revealed that three out of ten children aged 5-10 years were underweight while eight out of one hundred children of the same age were overweight, making malnutrition and obesity two of the most pressing nutritional problems in the Philippines today.

The Jr.NBA and Jr.WNBA presented by Alaska is under Alaska Milk’s Nutrition.Action.Champion program. It helps address the issue of overweight and undernourished Filipino children with the promotion of proper nutrition and active lifestyle through sports and outdoor play.

This year’s program started with the tip-off at Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati last Jan. 23. School clinics, that teach the fundamentals of basketball, will run until April with stops in Bukidnon, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Dagupan, Davao, Iloilo, Metro Manila and Puerto Princesa.
